East Coast Round-Up

When planning this trip, we decided to give ourselves a long break in VA and DC to spend time with our parents, unwind, and thoroughly clean all of our gear.  After the relatively fast pace we set for ourselves through the southwest and midwest, it was nice to relax into some familiar surroundings at home.  In Virginia, we enjoyed a few long walks around Burke Lake and a short a hike in Fountainhead Regional Park.  We took a trip into Maryland for some strawberry picking at Butler's Orchard, a favorite place of mine from when I was a little kid.  Matt even had a chance to get in some unicycling while we were home.

After about a week in VA, we moved to DC to spend time with my parents.  Our time in DC also meant that we got to see Henry, who is taking an extended vacation with my parents while we travel.  We were hoping that Henry would exuberantly jump into our laps when we arrived, but he mostly just sniffed Matt's toes cautiously and then went to sit next to my mom.  He seems to be having the time of his life, though, so we were happy to see that.

We spent our time in DC visiting museums with my parents, picking veggies in their community garden, and visiting the National Arboretum to see the bonsai collections.

Our two weeks at home flew by quickly, but soon we were back on the road again, making quick stops to see friends outside New York and Boston before landing in Cape Cod to visit Matt's aunt and uncle.  We spent 2 days on the Cape, and only managed to just scratched the surface of all the sights and activities.  The first day we went on a scenic drive along route 6A out to the end of the Cape in Provincetown, MA.  6A follows the route of some of the original roads built by the pilgrims, and passes through some of the country's oldest towns.  On the second day we walked around Barnstable, MA, a town that was founded by one of Matt's ancestors (a great grandfather 14 generations ago in the 1640's). Then we checked out a few lighthouses nearby, Nauset Light and the Three Sisters.  That evening, Matt's aunt and uncle treated us to a delicious dinner in Woods Hole, followed by a tremendous one-man jazz concert by Howard Levy.  It was a fun and memorable night.  Although we didn't have time for a boat ride to Martha's Vineyard, it's high on our list for the next time we're on the Cape.
